Betrayal

Payal loved her Suresh Uncle. He used to give her chocolates and dolls! Yet, somehow she felt scared walking down that dark alley with him to meet some other Uncles.

Suddenly Payal woke up. Its been 5 years. She still dreamed about that alley everyday.

Meera yelled again “Get ready! Your new customer is waiting”

I was inspired to write this 55er after watching the TED talk – Sunitha Krishnan’s fight against sex slavery  in a post by IHM.

Sunitha Krishnan has dedicated her life to rescuing women and children from sex slavery, a multimilion-dollar global market. In this courageous talk, she tells three powerful stories, as well as her own, and calls for a more humane approach to helping these young victims rebuild their lives.

Do watch the powerful talk.

Dr. Sunitha Krishnan is the Chief Functionary of the Prajwala, an anti-trafficking organization. Prajwala has 80G tax exemption which ensures 50% tax deduction for all Indian donors.

  1. Sunitha Krishnan’s pain and her anger is what is most moving. I am so glad she channelised her anger so positively. And she is so right when she says what was worse than the trauma was the feeling of being stigmatised. What kind of society would, instead of support, stigmatise a victim?

    • I have become a fan of her strength! we get saddened and heart broken at such small things and look at her! We live in a society where if a girl dresses in jeans and t shirt and is raped, its said that she “invited” it!!

  2. Apu, I received the email from you, followed the video… and now read this 55 story… heartache…..

this story is very short in size, but left an impression in heart, that is pinning me….
good writing… good work all over……

  3. Can’t see the video from home, will see it soon. Nice 55er you got there. Its shocking to see the size of the ‘market’. Sometimes, it makes us think if it is worth even fighting such big rackets. It takes a lot of bravery to do that.

  4. Very well written.. A sensitive topic, but meaning well conveyed even if there was a restriction on words.. It’s a real challenge when you’re bound by a word limit.. 🙂 Good video too.. Feeling agitated and helpless at the same time..
